Jakarta. The state health insurer BPJS Kesehatan reminds people to make sure that their national health insurance or Jaminan Kesehatan Nasional (JKN) stays active by making regular financial contributions.

BPJS Kesehatan public relations head Rizzky Anugerah said that the JKN Program puts emphasis on cooperation, where participant rights and obligations are balanced. The agency urged JKN participants to meet their regular contributions so they can keep their healthcare coverage.

"For self-employed individuals who have outstanding contributions, their JKN membership status will become inactive. To regain access to healthcare coverage, participants must pay off the outstanding contributions to reactivate their membership status. Once their membership status is reactivated, they can access healthcare services, particularly outpatient services, in accordance with applicable regulations," said Rizzky.

If a participant requires inpatient care at a hospital, coverage can still be provided by BPJS Kesehatan. However, there are service fines that participants need to be aware of.

Rizzky explained that, based on Presidential Regulation Number 59 of 2024, the service fine stands at 5% of the estimated healthcare costs multiplied by the number of months in arrears, with a maximum arrears calculation limit of 12 months. The maximum service fine that must be paid is Rp 20 million ($1,170), although in practice, the fine is generally much lower than this maximum limit.

"It's important to understand that this service fine only applies if the participant is hospitalized within 45 days of their JKN membership being reinstated. If the period exceeds that, the participant will not be subject to a service fine," added Rizzky.

Given the unpredictable nature of the risk of illness, participants are advised to ensure their JKN membership status is always active. This is also to avoid service fines if they require inpatient care.

BPJS Kesehatan has provided various contribution payment channels for better user convenience.

Rizzky added that there are currently nearly one million payment channels available, ranging from banking services such as ATMs and mobile banking to minimarket networks, and even digital wallets.

This way, there should be no more excuses for participants to fall behind on their contributions. Regular contribution payments are key to maintaining health protection.

"The JKN program demonstrates the government's presence in ensuring that all Indonesians receive adequate health care. Regularly paying contributions is not only an individual obligation, but also part of our shared responsibility as citizens in supporting the sustainability of the JKN program," Rizzky said.
