Jakarta. Nusa Waluya II hospital ship has offered an alternative healthcare option in Southeast Maluku, expanding access to the national health insurance (JKN) program.

BPJS Kesehatan president director Prihati Pujowaskito recently observed the ship during a visit to Kei Besar.

"Each region has distinct characteristics and healthcare needs. In archipelagic areas, for instance, bringing healthcare services closer to the community expands access options," Pujo was quoted as saying in a press statement.

The JKN offers the DBTFMS scheme, which enables access to regions without adequate healthcare facilities.

In such instances, BPJS Kesehatan provides compensation through various approaches, including collaborating with external parties to supply health facilities and developing mobile healthcare services, including hospital ships.

While stationed in a region, the Nusa Waluya II hospital ship provides healthcare services in line with its operational mission, ranging from outpatient clinic services, inpatient care, and emergency units to specific medical procedures.

“For [JKN] participants, the most important thing is how their medical needs are met. It is not merely a question of whether facilities exist, but also of how participants receive appropriate, high-quality, and continuous care when they require follow-up treatment,” said Pujo.

Pujo noted that the Nusa Waluya II hospital ship can travel between regions and dock for specific service periods. This model allows healthcare services to be delivered directly to mission-target locations before moving on to the next area.

“The benefits of JKN [National Health Insurance] must be felt by participants wherever they are. Therefore, in regions where specific characteristics make accessing care challenging, we need to identify the most suitable approach to ensure participants still receive the care they need,” Pujo stated.

Muttaqien, a member of the National Social Security Council (DJSN), stated that the state’s presence is essential to ensure that communities across all regions receive the services they require.

He noted that doctorSHARE has consistently strived to bring healthcare services to various parts of Indonesia, including hard-to-reach areas.

“DoctorSHARE is working to deliver services to the farthest reaches of the country," Muttaqien said, while calling for multistakeholder partnership.

Tasia Risma Lidya Simaremare, Director of the Nusa Waluya II hospital ship, stated that the presence of the hospital ship reflects a commitment to improving healthcare quality in archipelagic regions facing geographical challenges.

Operated by the Dokter Peduli Foundation (doctorSHARE), the hospital employs a mobile service model to reach communities with limited access to healthcare facilities.

“The concept is simple: when people face limitations in visiting healthcare facilities, we bring services directly to them. This serves as an alternative way to open up access to care for those who struggle to reach healthcare facilities,” said Tasia.

Nusa Waluya II is one of four hospital ships operated by doctorSHARE.

On Kei Besar Island, the Nusa Waluya II hospital ship has served approximately 3,300 patient visits since September 8, 2026.
