Jakarta. Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung inaugurates two water storage ponds in East Jakarta on Monday as the capital steps up efforts to reduce flood risks by storing rainwater and conserving water resources.

The Batu Bangkong and Bambu Hitam ponds in Cipayung district have a combined storage capacity of 36,550 cubic meters. The Jakarta administration is also developing additional ponds and reservoirs while continuing river normalization projects as part of its long-term flood prevention strategy.

“Flood management in Jakarta is not just about responding when it rains. We prioritize prevention,” Pramono said.

Built by the Jakarta Water Resources Agency starting in 2025, the two ponds incorporate blue-green infrastructure and nature-based solutions. Beyond helping manage excess rainwater, they are designed to support water conservation and provide recreational spaces for residents.

Batu Bangkong Pond covers 1.3 hectares, including a water surface of 0.58 hectares, and has a storage capacity of 20,300 cubic meters. Bambu Hitam Pond spans about 2.1 hectares, with a water surface of 0.50 hectares and a storage capacity of 16,250 cubic meters.

Pramono said the ponds were designed to retain water rather than immediately channel it away, allowing some of it to seep into the ground and replenish local water resources.

“The main function of these ponds is to store water. Rather than channeling it away, the water is allowed to seep into the ground here,” he said.

The administration is also continuing river normalization projects along the Ciliwung, Cakung Lama and Krukut rivers. Pramono said expanding the network of ponds and reservoirs would increase Jakarta’s capacity to manage excess water during heavy rainfall.

He said water storage ponds generally cover less than two hectares, while reservoirs typically span about five hectares. East Jakarta has the potential to accommodate more of these facilities, he added.

Both ponds also feature jogging tracks, children’s playgrounds, a community hall, a multipurpose field and a sunken plaza for public activities. The facilities can serve as recreational spaces during dry weather, while the ponds provide water storage during rainfall.

Pramono stressed the importance of maintaining the facilities to ensure they remain accessible and useful to residents. He urged local authorities to keep the areas clean and well maintained, noting that the public can use them free of charge.
