Jakarta Secures Rp 5 Trillion Facility to Electrify 3,782 Buses, Mikrotrans
Jakarta. The Jakarta administration is preparing a Rp 5.07 trillion ($282.5 million) financing facility to support the electrification of 3,782 Transjakarta buses and Mikrotrans minivans over the next three years, as the capital aims to transition its bus fleet to low-emission vehicles by 2029.
The cooperation agreement involving city-owned public transport operator Transportasi Jakarta, Bank DKI and city-owned lender Jamkrida Jakarta was signed at Jakarta City Hall on Monday.
Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung said electrifying the Transjakarta fleet was among the most challenging cooperation initiatives to implement, given the substantial financing required.
“For me, what matters most is not the signing or the cooperation itself, but its implementation,” Pramono said in his remarks.
Pramono said Jakarta currently operates around 500 electric buses. He expressed hope that the electrification program would enable nearly the entire bus fleet to use electric, hydrogen or hybrid technology.
“If we can achieve that, nearly 100 percent of our buses will be electric, hybrid or hydrogen-powered,” he said.
Pramono set a target for Jakarta’s entire bus fleet to transition to these technologies by 2029. He also said hydrogen-powered and hybrid buses would soon be introduced in the capital.
However, Pramono questioned how much transport electrification could reduce air pollution if other sources of emissions remained unaddressed.
He pointed to coal use at power plants and industrial facilities in the Suralaya area of Banten, which he said also contributed to Jakarta’s air pollution problems.
Pramono said he would coordinate with the central government on coal use at the power plants and industrial facilities.
He also linked pollution reduction efforts to plans to operate waste-to-energy facilities in Bantar Gebang and Tunjungan by 2029. However, he said the impact of the policy on Jakarta’s air quality remained to be seen.
Transjakarta fleet electrification is part of Jakarta’s efforts to reduce emissions from the transport sector. The Jakarta administration has previously said that transportation accounts for around 52% of the capital’s total direct emissions.
