Pramono Sets 2027 Deadline to Complete Key North–East Road Link
Jakarta. The Jakarta administration has set a 2027 deadline to complete the 1.8-kilometer Kelapa Gading–Pulo Gadung arterial road, a long-delayed infrastructure project first planned in 2006 and under construction since 2009.
Governor Pramono Anung said completing the road was a priority because of its potential to improve connectivity between North and East Jakarta and ease traffic congestion along one of the capital's major transportation corridors.
"Projects that remain unfinished and offer significant benefits to the city's development, especially transportation, must be prioritized for completion," Pramono said during an inspection of the construction site on Friday.
He said he had instructed Jakarta Bina Marga Agency Head Heru Suwondo to ensure that the project was fully completed no later than 2027.
The arterial road is designed to provide an alternative route between Kelapa Gading in North Jakarta and Pulo Gadung in East Jakarta. It will connect the area around Gading Pluit Hospital with Pulo Gadung Terminal while improving access for motorists traveling into the capital from Bekasi.
Once fully operational, the road is expected to offer motorists another route between the two areas, helping reduce pressure on Jalan Perintis Kemerdekaan, a major thoroughfare connecting eastern Jakarta with the city's northern districts.
Partially Open, but Not Yet Complete
Despite years of delays, some sections of the road are already being used by motorists under temporary traffic arrangements.
Heru said the completed sections were functioning on a limited basis, particularly for vehicles traveling from the west toward the north, with two-way traffic arrangements currently in place.
"Functionally, the road is already serving its purpose. However, to operate at 100% in accordance with the plan, the target is next year," Heru said.
The city government expects the remaining construction work to be completed in 2027, allowing the road to operate according to its original design.
The project is part of Jakarta's broader efforts to improve road connectivity and address traffic bottlenecks in densely populated residential and commercial areas.
In addition to completing the arterial road, the administration is preparing several infrastructure improvements in Kelapa Gading.
These include repairing uneven road surfaces, addressing traffic and infrastructure issues around the Kelapa Gading Roundabout, and upgrading public and community facilities that have been transferred to the Jakarta administration.
Pramono said unfinished infrastructure projects that could deliver significant public benefits should receive priority, particularly those capable of improving mobility and supporting the capital's transportation network.
