Jakarta Eyes MRT Expansion Beyond the Capital to South Tangerang
Jakarta. Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung has opened the possibility of extending the Jakarta MRT network to South Tangerang in Banten, as preparations continue for the east-west MRT line and efforts to improve transport links between the capital and its surrounding areas.
Pramono said cooperation between the central government and the Jakarta administration on the east-west MRT line had begun. Land acquisition was also underway, and a team had been established to support the project’s development.
According to Pramono, extending the network to Tangerang, and potentially South Tangerang, could be possible if the construction phases proceed smoothly, including the development of a depot in Rorotan, North Jakarta.
“There is an aspiration for it to reach South Tangerang, and hopefully that can be realized,” Pramono said at Jakarta City Hall on Monday.
However, Pramono did not provide a timeline or detailed route for a possible MRT extension to South Tangerang.
Pramono also cited the development of Transjabodetabek bus services as an example of how public transportation could be expanded to connect Jakarta with surrounding areas.
He said the bus service to Bogor in West Java recorded an average of around 10,000 passengers per day, far exceeding the initial projection of 2,000 passengers. Meanwhile, the service to the airport carried an average of around 7,000 passengers per day.
According to Pramono, these figures show that demand for cross-regional public transportation can exceed initial projections. The experience provides context for the administration’s efforts to expand public transport connectivity across the metropolitan area.
MRT Jakarta and property developer Sinar Mas Land are finalizing a feasibility study for a 22-kilometer MRT route connecting Lebak Bulus in South Jakarta to Serpong in South Tangerang, which is targeted for completion by the end of 2026.
