Jakarta. Jakarta and New York are discussing a potential visit by New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani to the Indonesian capital following a meeting with Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung in New York last month.

Pramono said Monday that there was no confirmation yet on reports that Mamdani could visit Jakarta for a conference in late October.

“We will announce the visit once there is certainty. For now, this is still in the early stages of discussion,” Pramono said in Jakarta.

Pramono met Mamdani for a bilateral meeting at Civic Hall in New York on Sept. 20 on the sidelines of the U20 Mayors Summit 2026, which brought together city leaders to discuss urban challenges and cooperation.

The meeting focused on issues shared by the two megacities, including public transportation, traffic congestion, flooding, air pollution and ways to finance urban development.

Mamdani was particularly interested in Jakarta’s efforts to tackle traffic congestion and expand public transportation, according to the Jakarta administration.

Pramono explained the development of Transjabodetabek, the public transportation network connecting Jakarta with surrounding cities and regencies in the greater Jakarta area. The system is intended to improve regional connectivity and encourage residents to shift from private vehicles to public transportation.

The exchange comes as both cities face the challenges of managing dense urban populations and improving mobility while addressing environmental and infrastructure pressures.

Pramono also presented Jakarta’s plan to issue municipal bonds, known as Jakarta Bonds, as a potential financing source for infrastructure and other development projects.

Mamdani offered to facilitate an exchange between the finance teams of New York and Jakarta to share experience and knowledge about municipal bond issuance, the Jakarta administration said.

Municipal bonds allow local governments to raise funds directly from investors to finance public projects, although the mechanism requires regulatory and financial safeguards.

Mamdani, 34, was elected New York mayor in November 2025 and took office in January 2026, becoming the city’s first Muslim mayor and one of its youngest mayors in modern history.
