Jakarta Completes Revamp of 16 School Buildings
Jakarta. The Jakarta administration has completed the revitalization of 16 of 19 school buildings included in its 2025 program, with work on the remaining three still underway.
The program has a total budget of Rp876.79 billion ($49 million), Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung said during an inspection of SDN 05 Pekayon Elementary School and SMPN 91 Jakarta Junior High School in East Jakarta on Monday.
The two schools, whose previous buildings were about 50 to 60 years old, have been combined into a new multistory facility built for Rp101.3 billion. The building features elevators, a library, a canteen, classrooms and sports facilities, including basketball, volleyball and mini soccer courts.
Pramono said vertical construction was one way to make more efficient use of land in the capital, where space is limited, and property prices are high.
“The main challenge in Jakarta is land availability. As land becomes increasingly expensive, we need to use it more efficiently so children have more options,” he said.
The new building has also changed the learning arrangements at SMPN 91 Jakarta. Principal Yuhanah said the school previously operated in two shifts, morning and afternoon, with 16 class groups. It can now accommodate students in a single shift after the new facility was completed.
Students still need teacher supervision when using the elevators to ensure their safety, particularly those with disabilities or health conditions.
Pramono praised the facilities, saying the school compares favorably with overseas schools.
“In my view, this school is no less advanced than schools overseas. It has complete facilities, including elevators, a library, a canteen, well-equipped classrooms and sports facilities,” he said.
He said the revitalization program was part of the administration’s broader efforts to improve education quality. Other measures include financial assistance for eligible school students through the Jakarta Smart Card (KJP) program and support for university students through the Jakarta Outstanding Student Card (KJMU).
Pramono also described Jakarta as Indonesia’s leading city for students, a claim supported by the QS Best Student Cities 2027 ranking. Jakarta placed 117th globally, ahead of Yogyakarta at 118th, Bandung at 128th and Surabaya at 140th.
The administration’s school renovation and revitalization program covers multiple education levels, from kindergartens to senior high schools and vocational schools, across Jakarta’s five administrative cities. The program includes both the renovation of existing buildings and the construction of new facilities.
