Jakarta. For participants in Indonesia’s National Health Insurance (JKN) program, keeping their membership active is essential to ensure continued access to healthcare benefits under applicable regulations.

Children registered as family members of salaried workers, or Pekerja Penerima Upah (PPU), can remain covered under the JKN program until the age of 25, provided they meet certain requirements.

BPJS Kesehatan Head of Public Relations Rizzky Anugerah said the provision is regulated under Presidential Regulation No. 82 of 2018 on Health Insurance. Children registered as dependents of PPU participants are generally covered until the age of 21, with coverage extendable until the age of 25 if they are still pursuing formal education and meet the applicable requirements.

“For children of PPU participants who are already 21 but not yet 25 years old and are still pursuing formal education, their membership as covered family dependents can continue until they reach the age of 25. To reactivate their membership status, participants need to provide a letter confirming that they are still enrolled in formal education as proof,” Rizzky said on Friday.

Rizzky explained that membership can be reactivated through BPJS Kesehatan's Administrative Services via WhatsApp (PANDAWA) at 08118165165. The platform provides membership reactivation services, including for children aged over 21 who are still attending university.

“Participants can contact PANDAWA via WhatsApp and select the Administration menu. They will then receive a link to fill out a form and can select the Membership Status Reactivation menu, followed by the category ‘Child Over 21 Still in College.’ Participants must then prepare and upload the required documents, including a photo of their Family Card and a letter confirming active enrollment at school or university, or proof of tuition payment,” Rizzky explained.

During the reactivation process, participants must also ensure that their population and membership data are accurate, including their National Identity Number (NIK), name, date of birth, and family composition. Complete and accurate information is important to ensure the administrative process runs smoothly.

For children who no longer meet the requirements to remain covered as dependents of PPU participants, their membership status must be adjusted according to their circumstances. One available option is to register as a non-salaried worker, or Pekerja Bukan Penerima Upah (PBPU), commonly known as an independent participant, in accordance with JKN membership regulations.

“For participants who transition to PBPU or independent membership, it is important to ensure that monthly contributions are paid regularly. By making payments routinely and on time, participants can keep their membership active so they can continue to access JKN protection in accordance with the applicable regulations,” Rizzky said.

Rizzky also urged participants not to wait until they need medical treatment before checking whether their membership is active. JKN membership status can be checked regularly through the Mobile JKN application, Administrative Services via WhatsApp (PANDAWA), or Care Center 165.

“Do not wait until you fall ill to find out your JKN membership status. By regularly checking their status and paying contributions on time for independent participants, JKN members can remain protected when they need to access healthcare services,” Rizzky concluded.
