Jakarta. The national health insurance JKN provides healthcare protection for tens of millions of children, according to the state-owned insurer BPJS Kesehatan.

As of June 2026, over 71 million children and teens up to 17 years old are JKN participants. JKN -- short for Jaminan Kesehatan Nasional -- covers healthcare services from an early age, and includes both primary care and referral healthcare facilities.

BPJS Kesehatan spokesperson Rizzky Anugerah said that the agency had funded Rp 25.32 trillion ($1.4 billion) in healthcare services for participants aged 0–17. Some Rp 588.93 billion had gone for primary care, while the Rp 24.73 trillion others were for referral facilities.

The most common services provided in primary care are for flu cases, with more than 7.38 million visits.

"Followed by acute respiratory infections with 7.38 million visits," Rizzky said.

Fever, teething problems, diarrhea, sore throat, cough, and digestive disorders are also common.

The most common treatment in hospital services are typhoid fever, diarrhea, dengue fever, bronchopneumonia, dyspepsia, and pneumonia, among others.

These diverse conditions indicate that children remain vulnerable to a variety of illnesses, ranging from mild infections to those requiring further treatment in the hospital.

According to Rizzky, this is a reminder that maintaining children's health must begin within the family. Parents also play a crucial role in nurturing healthy lifestyle habits.

Efforts are underway to promote children's health, including the free meal program and the free health check program. The alignment of these policies are expected to make sure kids grow up well, hence paving the way for a golden era by 2045.

BPJS Kesehatan is also optimizing preventive and promotive services through the medical history screening services.

"This medical screening was used 66.19 million times by JKN participants throughout last year. It allows people to identify disease risk factors earlier so that preventive measures and treatment can be implemented more quickly and appropriately," Rizzky said.

Rizzky also reminded people to make sure that all family members, including children, are registered as active JKN participants.
