Bahlil Weighs Ending Gas Export Contracts to Prioritize Domestic Supply
Jakarta. Indonesia is considering not renewing natural gas export contracts with neighboring countries to prioritize domestic energy needs amid growing global uncertainty, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Bahlil Lahadalia said.
Bahlil said the move would follow President Prabowo Subianto’s directive for Indonesia to adopt a survival-oriented approach amid geopolitical tensions and global energy challenges.
“As state officials, we must translate everything President Prabowo has said into concrete programs to ensure the country’s survival,” Bahlil told reporters in Jakarta.
He said the government could reassess energy exports, particularly natural gas, to ensure domestic demand is met before supplies are allocated to overseas markets.
“If other countries have different views about us, they should be careful. I am also considering not renewing gas export contracts with neighboring countries. We have to ensure our survival and meet domestic needs first,” Bahlil said.
The potential policy shift reflects the government’s emphasis on securing domestic energy supplies amid external uncertainties, with priority given to meeting the needs of Indonesian industries and households.
