Light Rain Forecast as Jakarta Flood Gradually Recede
Jakarta. The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) forecast light rain across much of Jakarta on Saturday, even as floodwaters that inundated parts of the capital earlier this week continued to recede.
According to BMKG, light rain is expected in West and Central Jakarta during the morning hours, followed by mostly overcast conditions through the afternoon and evening. North Jakarta is forecast to see a similar pattern, with light rain in the morning, cloudy skies during the day and evening, and another bout of light rain late at night.
In South Jakarta, skies are expected to be overcast early in the morning before light rain develops from late morning through early evening. East Jakarta is likely to experience the longest period of rainfall, with light rain forecast to persist from morning until late at night. The Thousand Islands district is also expected to see intermittent light rain, particularly in the morning and evening.
BMKG urged residents to remain alert to changing weather conditions and adjust outdoor activities accordingly, as rainfall could exacerbate lingering waterlogging in low-lying areas.
Separately, the Jakarta Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) reported that flooding continued to affect 30 neighborhood units (RT) across parts of East Jakarta, North Jakarta, and South Jakarta as of Saturday morning, with water levels reaching up to 50 centimeters.
BPBD’s head of disaster data and information, Mohamad Yohan, said flood conditions had improved significantly compared with the previous day, when water levels in some areas had surged as high as 3.5 meters following heavy rainfall.
“Floodwaters across Jakarta have generally receded. We are continuing intensive mitigation efforts, including pumping out standing water and ensuring drainage systems are functioning properly,” Yohan said, as quoted by state news agency Antara.
East Jakarta remains the hardest-hit area, accounting for 22 of the 30 flooded neighborhood units, particularly in Bidara Cina and Kampung Melayu, where water depths range from 15 to 50 centimeters. In South Jakarta, only one neighborhood unit in Pejaten Timur remains affected, with water levels of around 20 centimeters. North Jakarta has seven affected neighborhood units, mainly in Kapuk Muara and Marunda, with water depths below 50 centimeters.
Authorities said flooding in East and South Jakarta was driven by heavy rainfall and the overflow of the Ciliwung River, while inundation in North Jakarta was linked to rising water levels in the Angke and Nagrak rivers.
BPBD advised residents in flood-prone areas to stay vigilant, follow official guidance, and monitor updates as the city continues efforts to fully clear remaining floodwaters.
