Bali Records 123-Day Rain-Free Streak as El Nino Extends Dry Spell
Denpasar. Bali has recorded its longest rain-free period at 123 days, with dry conditions persisting across parts of the Indonesian tourist island as El Nino is expected to continue into early 2027.
The record was recorded at a rainfall monitoring station in Sumberklampok village, Gerokgak district, Buleleng regency, according to the Bali Climatology Station’s monitoring through Sept. 28.
“The longest rain-free period was recorded at the Sumberklampok rainfall station in Gerokgak, making it the longest record,” forecaster Trayi Budi Samantu said in Denpasar, according to Antara on Tuesday.
Some parts of Bali experienced light rain during the first 10 days of September, but the rainfall was not sufficient to mark the start of the rainy season, Trayi said.
Drier conditions returned during the following 10-day period, with monitoring maps showing increasingly long rain-free periods across the island.
“Several areas that were initially green in the second 10-day period of September then turned orange, yellow, and red, with some becoming pink, indicating very long rain-free periods,” he said.
18 Areas See More Than Two Months Without Rain
Based on accumulated conditions throughout September, 17 areas in Bali experienced rain-free periods lasting between one and two months, while 18 other areas recorded extreme dry spells lasting more than two months.
The longest period was the 123-day streak in Sumberklampok, Gerokgak.
The prolonged dry conditions are linked to El Nino, which was forecast to persist into early 2027 based on the latest climate assessment for the second 10-day period of September.
El Nino, a periodic warming of surface waters in the central and eastern tropical Pacific Ocean that alters global weather patterns, can bring drier conditions to parts of Indonesia. Its effects also extend to other countries, including India, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, and Australia, although the timing and intensity vary by region.
“In Indonesia, the impact includes drier conditions from July through November, with the dry conditions continuing,” Trayi said.
Despite the prolonged dry spell, the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) forecasts that the rainy season will begin reaching Bali toward the end of November 2026 and peak in February 2027.
Authorities are urging residents to monitor BMKG weather and climate updates as rainfall patterns change ahead of the rainy season.
