Jakarta. Indonesia sits in one of the world’s most seismically active regions, making reliable and timely earthquake information particularly important for people living in earthquake-prone areas.

Earthquakes can strike anywhere in Indonesia with little or no warning. A series of significant earthquakes in August 2026, including magnitude 7.7 and 7.0 earthquakes that struck the Mbay area of Nagekeo, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), on Aug. 15, underscored the importance of access to reliable seismic information. The earthquakes also raised tsunami concerns. Two days later, a magnitude 5.8 earthquake struck the Ende area.

Such events highlight the importance of having quick access to information about earthquake locations, magnitude, depth, aftershocks and potential tsunami threats.

While official agencies such as the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) remain the primary sources for earthquake and tsunami warnings, several apps and websites can help users monitor seismic activity in Indonesia and around the world.

Here are eight earthquake monitoring apps and websites worth knowing.

1. Info BMKG
Info BMKG is the official mobile application of Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG).

The app provides information on recent earthquakes, tsunami warnings and weather conditions. Its earthquake data comes from BMKG’s network of seismographic stations across Indonesia.

Users can access information including an earthquake’s location, magnitude, depth and time of occurrence. The app can also provide notifications about earthquakes and other relevant hazards.

Info BMKG is available for Android and iOS devices through the Google Play Store and Apple App Store.

For people in Indonesia, Info BMKG should be considered one of the primary sources of official earthquake and tsunami information.

2. Earthquake Network
Earthquake Network takes a different approach to earthquake monitoring by combining information from professional seismic networks with data collected from smartphones.

The app can use the accelerometer built into mobile devices to detect vibrations. Data from multiple phones can help identify earthquake shaking in different locations.

The service provides earthquake notifications and maps showing seismic activity around the world, including Indonesia.

Because the system also relies on data from participating smartphones, the amount of information available can vary depending on the number of users in a particular area.

3. My Earthquake Alerts - Map
My Earthquake Alerts - Map provides earthquake information through an interactive map, allowing users to monitor seismic activity around the world from a single interface.

The map uses different icons and colors to help users distinguish earthquakes by magnitude.

The app also allows users to customize notifications based on factors such as earthquake magnitude and distance from a selected location.

Its data is collected from the United States Geological Survey (USGS) and other seismological institutions.

4. InaTEWS

The Indonesia Tsunami Early Warning System (InaTEWS) is an official BMKG service focused specifically on tsunami threats.

The website provides earthquake information, tsunami warning status and maps related to potential tsunami impacts. It uses data from seismic sensors and tide gauges located at various sites across Indonesia.

Ina-TEWS is particularly useful for people living in coastal areas and other locations potentially exposed to tsunami hazards.

Unlike the mobile apps on this list, Ina-TEWS does not require a separate app download and can be accessed through a web browser.

5. LastQuake
LastQuake
is a free earthquake monitoring app developed by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC).

The app provides earthquake information from around the world and allows users to customize notifications based on their location and the types of earthquakes they want to monitor.

One of its notable features is community reporting. People who experience an earthquake can submit reports about shaking and visible damage, including comments, photographs and videos. Such reports can help provide information about an earthquake’s impact on the ground.

LastQuake supports dozens of languages, including Indonesian, English, French, German, Korean and Chinese.

6. USGS Earthquake Notification Service
The USGS Earthquake Notification Service (ENS) is an official service provided by the US Geological Survey for monitoring earthquakes around the world.

Users can set up customized notifications based on factors such as location and earthquake magnitude. Notifications can be delivered through email and other supported channels.

ENS can be useful for people who want to monitor earthquake activity without constantly checking a website or app.

However, it is important to understand that USGS ENS is not an earthquake early-warning system.

The USGS says ENS notifications are generally issued after an earthquake has occurred and may arrive after people have already felt the shaking. It is therefore better understood as an earthquake notification and monitoring service rather than a system designed to provide warning before shaking begins.

Indonesian or English?
For Indonesian users, Info BMKG, Earthquake Network and LastQuake offer Indonesian-language options alongside English. Other services, including My Earthquake Alerts and USGS earthquake services, are primarily available in English.

For official warnings in Indonesia, users should rely on BMKG and Ina-TEWS, particularly during an earthquake or potential tsunami event. Third-party apps can be useful for additional monitoring but should not replace official emergency information.
