Eastern Indonesia Earthquake Death Toll Rises to 105
Nagekeo, NTT. The death toll from the powerful earthquake that struck Indonesia’s East Nusa Tenggara province on Aug. 15 has risen to 105, the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) said Wednesday.
BNPB chief Lt. Gen. Suharyanto gave the latest figure during a disaster coordination meeting chaired by President Prabowo Subianto at an emergency response post in Nagekeo regency, East Nusa Tenggara, on Wednesday.
Of the 105 fatalities, 48 people were killed when the earthquake struck, while 57 others were found during search and rescue operations, Suharyanto said.
The disaster has also injured 1,678 people, some of whom remain hospitalized at medical facilities across the affected areas. Authorities are also providing assistance to vulnerable groups, including elderly people and children, as they deal with trauma following the disaster.
The earthquake has forced 179,037 residents to evacuate their homes, according to provisional BNPB data. A total of 81,436 houses have been damaged, along with 1,951 public facilities, including schools, mosques and government offices.
“The worst affected are two regencies, Manggarai and East Manggarai, while Nagekeo is also severely affected and ranks third,” Suharyanto said.
The government and emergency response agencies are continuing search and rescue operations, treating injured residents, providing basic necessities to displaced people and restoring damaged public facilities.
Authorities are also conducting further assessments to determine the needs of affected communities as the emergency response continues.
