Indonesia’s Flores Hit by Another Strong Earthquake, One Dies of Shock
Kupang, NTT. A resident of the Manggarai district in East Nusa Tenggara province died after apparently suffering severe shock following a magnitude 5.6 earthquake on Thursday morning, bringing the death toll from a series of earthquakes in the region to 72.
The latest tremor struck at 6:45 a.m. local time, or 5:45 a.m. Jakarta time, with the epicenter on land about 37 kilometers (23 miles) northeast of Ruteng at a depth of 10 kilometers, according to the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysical Agency (BMKG).
The victim died at 10:15 a.m. at a medical post operated by Ruteng Regional Hospital (RSUD Ruteng). The resident was reportedly brought to the hospital after experiencing severe shock during the morning earthquake.
The tremor was strongly felt by residents, and several homes that had already sustained moderate damage in the earlier earthquakes reportedly suffered further damage.
As of Wednesday evening, authorities had recorded 3,055 aftershocks following the magnitude 7.7 earthquake, according to an update from the Manggarai emergency response post.
With the latest death, the number of people killed in NTT in connection with the earthquake disaster has risen to 72. Three of the deaths have reportedly been attributed to severe shock.
Displaced Residents Face Shortages
The disaster has also placed pressure on temporary shelters in Manggarai, where displaced residents are reporting shortages of food and other basic supplies.
Authorities' aid distribution has so far focused largely on residents whose homes suffered severe damage. Shelter residents say the assistance provided has not kept pace with the number of people staying at evacuation centers.
Residents are also seeking additional tents, saying many of the tents currently available are no longer suitable for use.
In addition to food supplies and shelter, residents have called for psychological support and trauma counseling as communities continue to cope with the effects of the earthquake and repeated aftershocks.
The magnitude 7.7 earthquake on Aug. 15 struck off the coast of Flores and caused widespread damage across parts of East Nusa Tenggara. The continuing seismic activity has complicated recovery efforts and heightened concerns among residents whose homes were damaged or destroyed.
