Jakarta. Volcanic ash from Mount Anak Krakatau and Mount Lewotolo is no longer being detected, while ash from Mount Dukono and Mount Ibu continues to spread at altitudes of up to 7,000 feet, Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysical Agency (BMKG) said Thursday.

BMKG said it was continuing to monitor volcanic ash from several active volcanoes across Indonesia and assess its potential impact on surrounding areas.

Ash from Mount Dukono, in North Maluku province, was detected in parts of North Halmahera regency and the waters southwest of Morotai. The ash plume was observed at altitudes of up to 7,000 feet.

Mount Ibu, also in North Maluku, was also producing ash at altitudes of up to 7,000 feet. The ash was detected over parts of West Halmahera regency and nearby waters.

BMKG said the distribution of volcanic ash from Mount Semeru in East Java could not yet be observed because the volcano was obscured by clouds.

“The Mount Semeru area could not be monitored because it was covered by clouds,” BMKG said in a statement posted on Instagram on Thursday. It said the weather conditions were limiting monitoring of volcanic ash in the area.

Despite the changes in ash distribution, BMKG said it would continue monitoring volcanic activity and its potential effects on surrounding areas.

The agency urged people in areas affected by volcanic ash to remain alert and follow updates from official sources, including BMKG, the Geological Agency’s Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) and local governments.

BMKG also advised residents not to panic and to rely on official information for updates on volcanic activity and potential hazards.
