Mount Anak Krakatau Erupts Again After Brief Lull in Volcanic Activity
Jakarta. Mount Anak Krakatau in the Sunda Strait erupted twice on Monday evening, several days after its volcanic alert level was lowered to Level II (Alert).
Anak Krakatau monitoring post officer Andi Suwardi said the first eruption occurred at about 8:13 p.m. local time, followed by a second eruption at 8:28 p.m.
The height of the eruption columns could not be observed visually, but both eruptions were recorded by a seismograph. The largest recorded amplitude was 33 millimeters, with the activity lasting about one minute and one second.
Volcanic ash was observed around the volcano, with the plume extending from the surface to about 2.7 kilometers above sea level and moving at an estimated speed of 9 kilometers per hour.
Despite the latest eruptions, Anak Krakatau's alert status remains at Level II. Authorities have urged residents, tourists, visitors, and climbers to stay at least two kilometers from the active crater.
Authorities have also urged communities and aviation operators around the Sunda Strait to monitor the latest official information on Anak Krakatau's activity and avoid unverified reports.
The volcano's eruptive activity had subsided by Tuesday morning, but its Level II alert status remained in place.
The latest eruptions came after a period of heightened activity earlier this month that significantly altered the volcanic island's coastline.
A prolonged eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau earlier this month added an estimated 32.8 hectares of land to the volcanic island in the Sunda Strait, the Geological Agency said Thursday, citing an analysis of Sentinel satellite imagery.
The newly formed land was detected along the northwestern, western and southwestern sectors of Anak Krakatau following continuous eruptive activity on Sept. 4-6.
