Mount Anak Krakatau Erupts Three Times Tuesday Morning
Jakarta. Mount Anak Krakatau erupted three times Tuesday morning, with the activity recorded by seismographs as authorities urged people and tourists to stay at least 3 kilometers from the volcano’s active crater.
The eruptions occurred at 5:08 a.m., 5:34 a.m. and 7:49 a.m. Jakarta time, according to Geological Agency data cited by the @infogempadunia Instagram account.
The first eruption recorded a maximum amplitude of 47 millimeters (mm) and lasted 15 seconds. The second reached 44 mm and lasted 10 seconds, while the third recorded a maximum amplitude of 48 mm and lasted 19 seconds.
No visual eruption was observed during any of the three events. Damage to several monitoring instruments has limited visual observation of Mount Anak Krakatau’s activity during eruptions.
Magma Indonesia data showed the volcano was obscured by fog ranging from level 0 to III during observations from midnight to 6 a.m. Tuesday. No crater smoke was observed, while weather conditions ranged from cloudy to overcast, with light winds blowing north and northwest.
The volcano also recorded 15 low-frequency earthquakes with amplitudes of 19-44 mm and durations of 3-18 seconds.
Another 11 hybrid or multiphase earthquakes were recorded, with amplitudes of 19-47 mm and durations of 4-16 seconds. No shallow volcanic earthquakes were observed.
Magma Indonesia also recorded one continuous tremor, with an amplitude ranging from 3-10 mm and predominantly at 5 mm.
Authorities have urged the public and tourists not to conduct activities within a 3-kilometer radius of the active crater of Mount Anak Krakatau, which sits in the Sunda Strait between Java and Sumatra.
