Astra Deploys Aid to Flood-Hit Sumatra
Jakarta. Indonesian conglomerate Astra, through its Nurani Astra initiative, has provided humanitarian assistance in response to the flash floods and landslides that had struck Sumatra.
The assistance focused on the three disaster-hit provinces: Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra. Companies part of the Astra Group joined forces to distribute the aid through Nurani Astra, which has long carried out humanitarian actions in various regions.
As a rapid response, Nurani Astra established 12 disaster posts: 3 in Aceh, 8 in North Sumatra, and 1 in West Sumatra. In addition to serving as aid distribution centers, these posts also provide emergency internet access for the community and to facilitate coordination in the field. Several posts also accommodate survivors from affected villages.
To date, more than 16,000 food packages and emergency supplies have been distributed to meet the needs of communities in the three provinces. Nearly 100 Astra Group employees volunteered to assist with evacuations, data collection, and aid distribution at various locations.
"Astra, through Nurani Astra, is committed to continuing to be present and acting quickly to support disaster management in Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra. We hope this assistance will strengthen recovery efforts for communities in affected areas," Astra's Chief of Corporate Affairs Boy Kelana Soebroto said.
Several Astra Group companies also participated in emergency response activities as needed on the ground. United Tractors deployed 32 units of heavy equipment and tactical transportation, including helicopters, to assist with road clearing, landslide clearance, and evacuations. Astra Honda Motor, through its official network, provided free motorcycle service for residents affected by the disaster and distributed emergency aid to ease the burden on the community. Toyota Astra Motor assisted basic necessities packages and vehicle servicing assistance.
Astra has collaborated with several agencies, both humanitarian and government agencies. The aid reached hundreds of thousands of necessities, including clothing, baby supplies, food items such as rice and instant food, drinking water, and water tanks and tanker trucks.
This support is part of Astra's commitment to being present in the community through sustainable social contributions. Astra will continue to monitor developments and collaborate with the government and humanitarian agencies to ensure that aid is distributed effectively and efficiently.
During the same period, Astra implemented a humanitarian program, providing 35 ambulances to 10 provinces in Indonesia, nine of which were distributed to Sumatra.
The assistance aligns with Astra's goal of prospering with the nation and commitment to Indonesia's sustainable development goals (SDGs).
