Jakarta. Digital transformation in the National Health Insurance (JKN) program remains a key focus for Indonesia’s Healthcare and Social Security Agency (BPJS Kesehatan). The agency’s efforts to develop digital services and data management systems recently drew attention from delegates of the Asia eHealth Information Network (AeHIN), who visited BPJS Kesehatan to observe the development of digital health systems in the Asia-Pacific region.

BPJS Kesehatan Information and Technology Director Setiaji said the AeHIN delegation gained insights into the implementation of Indonesia’s JKN system, including various digital innovations designed to improve access, service quality, and efficiency for JKN participants. The visit also served as a platform for participating countries to exchange experiences and best practices in developing digital-based healthcare systems.

“Currently, JKN membership has reached more than 285 million people, or over 98% of Indonesia’s population. To support services for participants, BPJS Kesehatan has partnered with 23,625 primary healthcare facilities, as well as 3,207 hospitals and major clinics across Indonesia,” Setiaji said.

Setiaji added that the AeHIN delegates were given the opportunity to observe BPJS Kesehatan’s digital dashboard at the agency’s Performance Management Center. The dashboard is used to support more effective and integrated management of the JKN program.

Through digital technology, the dashboard enables real-time monitoring of healthcare service transactions within the JKN program to ensure services remain optimal, accountable, and well-targeted.

“BPJS Kesehatan also uses monitoring systems and data analysis to detect potential fraud in healthcare claims processes. The use of dashboards and data analytics is part of efforts to strengthen JKN governance so the program can operate more transparently, effectively, and sustainably,” Setiaji said.

He emphasized that digital transformation within the JKN ecosystem is not only focused on improving service convenience, but also on supporting faster, data-driven decision-making.

“Through digital dashboards and data integration, BPJS Kesehatan can monitor services, detect potential fraud, and analyze disease patterns more quickly and accurately. The data also serves as the basis for strengthening promotive and preventive efforts so people continue adopting healthy lifestyles, while ensuring JKN financing can be managed more optimally,” he said.

According to Setiaji, international forums such as AeHIN provide important momentum to strengthen collaboration among countries in developing digital healthcare systems. He said the exchange of experiences and best practices among AeHIN members is expected to encourage more adaptive healthcare innovations that better address public needs.

“Through this visit, BPJS Kesehatan is not only sharing experiences related to JKN management and digital transformation, but also opening opportunities for collaboration and cooperation among countries in developing digital health systems. We hope synergy among AeHIN members can continue to be strengthened to deliver better healthcare innovations for people in each country,” he added.

Setiaji also stressed that BPJS Kesehatan, together with the Health Ministry, continues to strengthen digital transformation in the healthcare sector through the development of integrated, data-based systems. Efforts to improve healthcare interoperability and develop Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology are part of initiatives to provide more accessible, effective, and sustainable healthcare services in support of the JKN program.

At the same event, Asia eHealth Information Network Director Alvin Marcelo praised BPJS Kesehatan’s digital transformation progress in supporting the JKN program. He noted that AeHIN has maintained relations and conducted visits to BPJS Kesehatan in 2014, 2023, and 2026, witnessing significant advancements in the agency’s information technology systems.

“We are very impressed with the development of information technology at BPJS Kesehatan. We learned that effective management of information technology dashboards can be achieved with competent and dedicated human resources,” Alvin said.

He also highlighted that countries across Asia are currently facing similar challenges related to non-communicable diseases such as hypertension and diabetes. According to Alvin, forums such as AeHIN play an important role in strengthening collaboration and sharing experiences among countries to improve disease prevention efforts and reduce morbidity and mortality rates caused by non-communicable diseases.
