Jakarta. Indonesia’s Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs, Meutya Hafid, on Thursday called on Roblox to tighten its safety measures and align with the country’s child protection regulations, following rising concerns over inappropriate content and interactions on the platform.

Speaking after a meeting with Roblox’s Asia-Pacific representatives in Jakarta, Meutya stressed the importance of complying with local laws designed to safeguard minors online.

“We require developers to respect and implement Indonesia’s child protection rules,” she said in a press statement.

The minister’s intervention comes after parents and educators raised alarms over explicit or inappropriate user-generated content and interactions on Roblox, prompting the Primary and Secondary Education Ministry to ban students from playing the game.

Calls for Stricter Safeguards
Meutya urged Roblox to limit communication features between underage users and to strengthen screening mechanisms to filter harmful content. She also called for clearer and more user-friendly parental control tools.

“These improvements are essential to ensure Indonesian children are protected from potentially harmful content and interactions in the digital space,” she said.

Roblox, which allows users to create, share, and sell virtual items, has been a registered electronic service provider in Indonesia since 2022. This status obliges the company to help create a safe and healthy digital ecosystem that supports children’s positive growth.

“We hope Roblox can set an example of how a platform prioritizes the safety of young users, making Indonesia’s digital space a secure place to learn, play, and create,” Meutya added.

The ministry will give Roblox time to implement changes and conduct regular evaluations to ensure compliance, though Meutya did not specify a deadline or potential sanctions for non-compliance.
