Roblox Joins Google in Rolling Out Indonesia’s Child Safety Safeguards
Jakarta. Roblox has committed to tighten child safety measures in Indonesia, including mandatory age verification and chat restrictions, aligning with the government’s new child protection rules, Communications and Digital Minister Meutya Hafid said on Thursday.
The commitment was conveyed to the Communication and Digital Ministry (Komdigi) after a series of intensive discussions, reflecting the platform’s distinct challenges compared to social media.
“Today, Roblox conveyed its commitment to comply with Komdigi. This has actually been a long discussion, considering Roblox is a gaming platform that differs from social media. There are quite a lot of details we needed to work through,” Meutya said at the ministry’s office in Central Jakarta on Thursday.
She outlined three key measures Roblox will implement to comply with Government Regulation No. 17/2025, known as PP Tunas.
First, Roblox will enforce age verification for all users. Those who fail to verify their age will automatically lose access to direct communication features, including chat. This also applies to users over 16 who do not complete facial verification.
“Age verification is very important. Those who do not verify their age will have their chat features disabled. This includes users over 16 who do not complete facial verification, whose communication features will also be automatically turned off,” Meutya said.
Second, the platform will introduce age-based content classification. Game content accessible to users under 13 will differ from that for users aged 13–16 and those above 16, ensuring children only access content appropriate to their developmental stage.
Third, Roblox will provide screen time controls, allowing parents to directly manage and limit how long their children spend on the platform.
According to Meutya, the policy marks a significant step in addressing gaming addiction among children.
“This may be the first regulation of its kind for gaming, possibly in the world. Other countries generally only apply account access restrictions to social media. In Indonesia, this rule also applies to gaming platforms,” she said.
The announcement comes as compliance widens among global tech platforms. As of last week, Google recently formalized its adherence by introducing a minimum age requirement of 16 for YouTube users in Indonesia, while planning to phase out underage accounts and targeted advertising for minors, marking a notable shift in how major platforms operate in the country.
With Google’s move, the government says seven major global platforms, including X, TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, Threads, and Bigo Live, have now declared compliance.
The ministry welcomed Roblox’s response, noting that all eight major digital platforms targeted by the government have now complied with PP Tunas requirements. Authorities will continue monitoring to ensure consistent implementation.
