Tropical Cyclone Seedling 93S Puts Java, Yogyakarta on High Weather Alert
Yogyakarta. The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has warned that a developing tropical system in the Indian Ocean could trigger extreme weather across parts of the country, including Yogyakarta and large areas of Java.
BMKG said it is monitoring two tropical cyclone seedlings — identified as 93S and 95S — that could affect weather and sea conditions in the coming days.
Tropical Cyclone Seedling 93S, first detected on Dec. 11, is currently located in the Indian Ocean south of Central Java. BMKG said the system has a “moderate to high” probability of developing into a tropical cyclone within the next 24 hours.
“This system has the potential to directly or indirectly trigger extreme weather conditions in several regions,” BMKG said in a statement issued late Thursday.
BMKG forecasts moderate to heavy rainfall across a broad stretch of Java, including Banten, Jakarta, West Java, Central Java, Yogyakarta, and East Java, due to the influence of the system. Strong winds are also expected along the southern coastal areas of Banten, West Java, Central Java, and Yogyakarta.
Sea conditions are also expected to experience high waves of 1.25 to 2.5 meters — classified as moderate seas — forecast in the Sunda Strait, the Indian Ocean south of Bali to Sumba, and southern waters spanning the Bali–Lombok Strait to the Alas Strait.
BMKG is also tracking Tropical Cyclone Seedling 95S, which formed on Dec. 15 in the Arafura Sea north of Australia. While the system has a low chance of intensifying into a tropical cyclone within the next 24 hours, it could still bring heavy rainfall to parts of southern Papua.
In addition, wave heights of up to 2.5 to 4 meters, categorized as rough seas, are possible in waters off western Lampung and along the southern coast of Java, from Banten to East Java, BMKG said.
Authorities have urged residents, particularly those in Yogyakarta and along Java’s southern coastline, to remain alert for heavy rain, strong winds, and high waves, and to closely monitor official weather updates.
