Jakarta. A string of earthquakes shook Indonesia over the past 24 hours, including a magnitude 6.5 quake off East Java that damaged homes and sent residents fleeing late Tuesday night, according to the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG).

The strongest tremor struck at 11:49 p.m. near Sumenep, Madura Island, toppling houses on Sepudi Island and sparking panic across East Java. Shaking was felt as far as Bali and West Nusa Tenggara. Authorities said no casualties have been reported, but police confirmed several homes were moderately to severely damaged, with power cut on the island as a precaution.

BMKG placed the epicenter about 50 kilometers southeast of Sumenep at a depth of 11 kilometers. An initial tsunami warning was lifted, though officials cautioned residents to stay vigilant for aftershocks.

Earlier Tuesday evening, a magnitude 6.8 quake struck near the Talaud Islands in North Sulawesi at a depth of 113 kilometers. While the quake was widely felt, it did not trigger a tsunami and no damage was immediately reported.

Papua also recorded back-to-back quakes --magnitude 4.9 in Sarmi and 2.6 in Jayapura-- within half an hour of each other. Both were shallow but caused no reported damage. Earlier in the day, a 3.5-magnitude tremor was detected off the coast of Garut, West Java.
