Kupang, NTT. A magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) province early Saturday, damaging homes and public facilities in several areas, although no fatalities had been reported as of publication.

The earthquake struck at around 4:58 a.m. local time (2158 GMT Friday), according to the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysical Agency (BMKG).

At least four homes in Nanu, Lenda village, in West Cibal district, Manggarai regency, were severely damaged and reduced to rubble, according to local reports.

Severe damage was also reported at several other locations, including schools, government buildings, places of worship and health facilities.

At Ruteng Regional General Hospital, patients undergoing treatment reportedly fled their rooms and moved outside as a precaution amid concerns that the building could be damaged or collapse.

BMKG said the earthquake was centered at 8.35 degrees south latitude and 121.37 degrees east longitude, about 36 kilometers northeast of Mbay in Nagekeo regency. The earthquake had a shallow depth of 10 kilometers.

Several aftershocks were reported following the main earthquake.

BMKG urged residents to remain calm and monitor official information on earthquake activity and the potential for a tsunami from BMKG, the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) and the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB).

“Follow the tsunami early warning instructions issued by BPBD, BNPB and BMKG,” the agency said.

Authorities were continuing to assess the extent of damage and potential casualties following the earthquake.
