Prabowo Summons Economic Team Amid Market Volatility
Jakarta. President Prabowo Subianto convened a meeting with senior economic officials at the State Palace in Jakarta on Tuesday to discuss the national economy and the recent rout in the Jakarta Composite Index (JCI), Indonesia’s benchmark stock index.
Those attending included Chief Economic Affairs Minister Airlangga Hartarto, Bank Indonesia Senior Deputy Governor Destri Damayanti, Danantara Indonesia Chief Operating Officer Dony Oskaria, and members of the National Economic Council (DEN).
Speaking to reporters before entering the meeting, Airlangga said discussions would cover the state of the economy, including the JCI, which rebounded on Tuesday after plunging 15% last week.
The rupiah also strengthened against the US dollar, climbing above the Rp 18,000-per-dollar level in the previous session before falling below it at Tuesday’s close.
According to Bloomberg data, the rupiah gained 54 points, or 0.30%, to Rp 17,992 per dollar. The JCI rose 4.16%, or 208.018 points, to close the first trading session at 5,204.627.
“We will speak with the economic ministers and the DEN after the meeting. As for the JCI, we discussed it yesterday, and it has risen today,” Airlangga said.
Destri confirmed her attendance at the meeting, which brought together ministers and representatives of relevant institutions to discuss the national economy.
Dony said the coordination meeting involved economic ministries, the Finance Ministry, Bank Indonesia and the DEN. The discussions would focus on financial market developments and current economic conditions.
“I don’t know yet, but it will certainly be an economic meeting. The DEN, the coordinating minister and the finance minister will be there,” Dony told reporters.
Asked about the JCI’s future direction, Dony declined to comment before the meeting concluded.
“We can discuss it once we come out,” he said.
