Greenpeace Activists Climb Jakarta Landmark to Protest Climate Crisis, Living Costs
Jakarta. Greenpeace Indonesia activists climbed the Welcome Monument at the Hotel Indonesia traffic circle in Central Jakarta on Tuesday, unfurling a giant banner urging the government to tackle the climate crisis and lower living costs as President Prabowo Subianto’s administration marked its second anniversary.
The banner, bearing the message “Tackle the Climate Crisis, Lower the Cost of Living,” drew the attention of motorists and passersby along Jalan MH Thamrin in the capital’s central business district.
The protest coincided with the second anniversary of the Prabowo-Gibran Rakabuming administration, highlighting activists’ concerns over environmental issues and the rising cost of living.
Joint teams of military and police personnel arrived at the scene and urged the activists to climb down, warning that scaling the monument and remaining at its top posed a safety risk.
Some officers swam across the pool surrounding the monument to deliver their appeal directly to the activists from below.
The activists remained atop the monument despite repeated appeals from security personnel, according to observations at the scene.
The government had yet to issue an official response to the protesters’ demands, and further details on efforts to resolve the standoff were not immediately available.
