Ridwan Kamil Promises Breakthroughs to Tackle Floods, Traffic Jams in Jakarta
Jakarta. Gubernatorial candidate Ridwan Kamil has pledged to introduce innovative solutions to tackle Jakarta’s longstanding issues of flooding and worsening traffic congestion if elected in the November 27 election.
In addition to addressing these classic problems, Ridwan also plans to implement a new development strategy for Jakarta, which will soon lose its status as the national capital.
“We will bring fresh ideas to resolve recurring issues like floods, pollution, and traffic jams,” Ridwan said after registering his candidacy alongside his running mate, Suswono, at the General Election Commission. However, he did not disclose specific details about his proposed programs.
A former mayor of Bandung and governor of West Java, Ridwan expressed his vision of transforming Jakarta into a “global city” after the capital relocates to Nusantara in East Kalimantan.
“Both of us have the experience that can hopefully address the needs of Jakarta’s residents,” Ridwan added, referring to his running mate Suswono, who previously served as agriculture minister under President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.
Ridwan also vowed to ensure that every child in Jakarta has access to education, while promising affordable and high-quality healthcare for all residents.
In a nod to his deep-rooted football fandom, Ridwan even pledged to support Persija Jakarta, despite his well-known loyalty as a die-hard fan of Persib Bandung, Persija’s arch-rival.
Ridwan and Suswono are backed by a coalition of seven major political parties, along with at least five smaller parties. They will face competition from Pramono Anung and his running mate, Rano Karno, both prominent figures in the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P).
The race will also feature an independent candidate, Dharma Pongrekun, who is teaming up with Kun Wardana.
