Jakarta. President-elect Prabowo Subianto recently flew to Jordan to call for a Gaza ceasefire at a Jordan summit.

Jordan will host a conference co-organized with Egypt and the United Nations to coordinate a humanitarian response to the Gaza war on Tuesday. Prabowo, who currently serves as the defense minister, will represent Indonesia on President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo’s behalf. According to Defense Ministry spokesman Edwin Adrian Sumantha, Prabowo is set to arrive in the Jordanian capital of Amman on Monday.

“This conference is held to answer the calls for a ceasefire in Gaza. The summit wishes to provide space for world leaders to find ways to strengthen the international community’s responses to the humanitarian crisis in Gaza,” Edwin said Monday, as reported by the state-owned news agency Antara.

“By having an Indonesian representative in this summit, we hope we [Indonesia] can make tangible contributions in addressing Gaza’s humanitarian crisis,” Edwin said.

Prabowo is scheduled to have bilateral talks with Jordanian King Abdullah II bin Al-Hussein during his visit. 

Indonesia has been a staunch supporter of the Palestinian cause. 

Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi headed to Turkiye over the weekend for a Developing-8 (D-8) economic bloc meeting on the Gaza situation in Turkiye. According to the D-8 joint declaration, the group called for “an immediate, permanent, and unconditional ceasefire”. 

Prabowo also recently told the press that Jokowi had instructed him to set up a makeshift field hospital and send Indonesian medical workers to Gaza. Prabowo will officially assume power this October.
