Jakarta. Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung has traveled to New York to attend the Urban 20 (U20) Mayors Summit 2026 at the invitation of New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, with the two cities set to explore cooperation on public services and other urban challenges.

Pramono departed on Thursday and is scheduled to meet Mamdani on Sunday, Sept. 20. Their bilateral talks are expected to cover public transportation, air quality, water management and coastal resilience, waste management and food affordability.

The visit comes as New York and Los Angeles jointly chair the 2026 U20 cycle. The U20 brings together mayors and other leaders from major cities to develop recommendations for national governments participating in the Group of 20.

For 2026, the forum is focusing on affordable housing and homelessness, climate action and urban resilience, and protecting immigrant communities and human mobility. The summit is scheduled for Sept. 19-21 in New York.

Jakarta has participated in the U20 since its earlier cycles and previously hosted the forum in 2022. The city uses the platform to exchange experiences with other major cities on challenges ranging from climate change and mobility to urban development.

Focus on Urban Heat and Climate Resilience
Pramono is also scheduled to speak at a Heat Roundtable organized by C40 Cities, Harvard University's Salata Institute for Climate and Sustainability, and the Atlantic Council's Climate Resilience Center.

The session will bring together city leaders, including the mayors of Paris and Freetown, to discuss rising urban heat and approaches to strengthening climate resilience.

Beyond climate issues, Pramono's itinerary includes a planned Letter of Intent with New York University. The proposed cooperation will focus on developing Jakarta's sports and tourism industries, including international event management and marketing through education and international collaboration.

Pramono said the visit would provide Jakarta with an opportunity to strengthen international city-to-city cooperation while bringing back knowledge and partnerships that could be applied to public services and residents' quality of life.

The U20's main outcome is a communiqué containing recommendations from participating cities that is presented to G20 national governments ahead of the annual G20 summit.
