New York. Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung and New York Mayor Zohran Kwame Mamdani discussed strategies to tackle traffic congestion and flooding, as well as municipal bond financing for urban infrastructure, during a bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the Urban 20 (U20) Mayoral Summit.

The meeting took place at Civic Hall in New York on Sunday, with the two city leaders exchanging experiences on public transportation, air pollution and urban development financing.

Mamdani specifically explored Jakarta's approach to reducing congestion and expanding public transportation, Pramono said.

The Jakarta governor highlighted the development of Transjabodetabek services, which aim to improve connectivity between the capital and surrounding areas while reducing private vehicle use.

"More than four million people travel in and out of Jakarta every day, especially during peak hours," Pramono said. "Through Transjabodetabek, we want to reduce congestion and the number of vehicles entering Jakarta while strengthening regional connectivity."

The Jakarta administration also provides free public transportation to 15 categories of residents, including senior citizens, people with disabilities, and students, he said.

Flood Control and Jakarta Bond
Pramono and Mamdani also discussed flood management, a shared challenge for both cities.

Jakarta's strategy includes strengthening flood-control infrastructure, reducing groundwater use to curb land subsidence and developing the Giant Sea Wall project.

"Like New York, one of Jakarta's challenges is flooding. That is why we continue to strengthen flood-control infrastructure, reduce groundwater use to curb land subsidence and develop the Giant Sea Wall," Pramono said.

The meeting also covered Jakarta's plan to issue municipal bonds, known as Jakarta Bond, to finance urban infrastructure development.

Mamdani welcomed the plan and offered an exchange of knowledge between New York's and Jakarta's finance teams, according to the Jakarta administration.

The bilateral meeting formed part of efforts by the two cities to share experience in addressing urban challenges and explore cooperation in city development.

Jakarta Pitches $7 Billion in Projects
The meeting followed Pramono's participation in the U20 Mayoral Plenary at Civic Hall on Saturday, where he presented Jakarta's economic performance and investment opportunities to global city leaders.

Jakarta's economy grew 5.52% in the second quarter of 2026, while inflation stood at 2.5%, Pramono said. Investment inflows reached $10.5 billion during the first six months of the year.

He also offered 37 urban development projects with a potential investment value of $7 billion.

"Jakarta is ready to open investment opportunities through 37 urban development projects," Pramono said, inviting city partners, businesses and global investors to participate in the city's development.

The U20 Mayoral Summit, hosted by New York from Sept. 19-21, focuses on affordable housing and homelessness, climate action and urban resilience, and the protection of immigrant communities and human mobility. The forum is expected to produce joint policy recommendations for sustainable urban development.
