Prabowo Promises Rp3 Billion Bonus for Asian Games Gold Medalists
Jakarta. President Prabowo Subianto on Wednesday formally sent off Indonesia’s delegation for the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, promising a Rp3 billion ($172,000) state bonus for each athlete who wins a gold medal.
The Asian Games will be held from Sept. 19 to Oct. 4, with Indonesia sending 430 athletes across 35 sports, according to the Indonesian Olympic Committee (NOC Indonesia).
The delegation also includes 145 officials and 78 support staff, including doctors, masseurs, physiotherapists, and headquarters personnel.
“For the SEA Games, a gold medal is Rp1 billion, but for the Asian Games it is Rp3 billion,” Prabowo said at the State Palace in Jakarta on Wednesday.
He said bonuses for silver and bronze medalists would also be given, although he did not specify the amounts.
Prabowo also called on Indonesian athletes to compete with determination and resilience on the international stage.
“Show that we are tough and do not give up,” he said.
Indonesia has allocated Rp283 billion to prepare and send its delegation to the Asian Games. Of the total, Rp222 billion is earmarked for the national training program, while Rp61 billion will cover the cost of sending the delegation to Japan.
The training budget was increased by Rp95 billion from an earlier allocation of Rp127 billion.
Indonesia is targeting four gold medals at the Games. Badminton, weightlifting, and sport climbing are among the sports expected to provide the country’s strongest medal prospects.
In weightlifting, Indonesia is relying on Olympic champion Rizki Juniansyah and Asian Games champion Rahmat Erwin Abdullah.
Sport climbing is expected to contribute through Olympic champion and 2026 world champion Veddriq Leonardo and Asian Games champion Desak Made Rita Kusuma Dewi.
The Indonesian delegation will compete in 35 of the 43 sports contested at the Aichi-Nagoya Games. The sports include athletics, aquatics, badminton, basketball, boxing, cycling, esports, fencing, golf, gymnastics, judo, karate, modern pentathlon, padel, sepak takraw, shooting, skateboarding, sport climbing, surfing, squash, taekwondo, table tennis, tennis, teqball, triathlon, volleyball, weightlifting, wrestling, wushu and mixed martial arts.
Prabowo attended the send-off ceremony alongside Youth and Sports Minister Erick Thohir, State Secretary Minister Prasetyo Hadi, Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya and other members of his cabinet.
