Jakarta. Nurisa Dian Ashrifah made Indonesian sporting history Thursday by winning the country's first-ever Asian Games archery gold, while also delivering Indonesia's fifth gold medal at the Aichi-Nagoya Games and pushing the contingent beyond its pre-Games target.

Competing in the women's individual compound event, Nurisa defeated the Philippines' Amaya Amparo Cojuangco 139-137 in a tightly contested final at Okazaki Chuo Sogo Park in Aichi.

Nurisa held her nerve under pressure and sealed the victory with a 10-point shot in the decisive end.

The triumph marked Indonesia's first archery gold in Asian Games history. Since archery returned to the Games as a medal sport in 1978, Indonesian archers had previously come no closer than silver.

Indonesia won men's recurve team silver in 1982 and women's recurve team silver in 1994, while Diananda Choirunisa took silver in the women's individual recurve event at the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta.

Nurisa's victory also lifted Indonesia to five gold medals in Aichi-Nagoya, surpassing the government's pre-Games target of four.

“We have secured our fifth gold, which means we have exceeded the target of four gold medals that we set,” Youth and Sports Minister Erick Thohir said.

“We still have athletes competing in finals today. I hope they give everything they have and show a strong fighting spirit because we still have opportunities to add more gold medals.”

Indonesia had reached its four-gold target a day earlier when Desak Made Rita Kusuma Dewi won the women's speed climbing title.

Badminton has contributed two gold medals, through the men's team and men's doubles events, while weightlifter Rahmat Erwin Abdullah delivered another.

Men's doubles pair Leo Rolly Carnando and Daniel Marthin won their individual title after having already helped Indonesia capture the men's team badminton gold.

Nurisa's victory therefore turned the government's target from a goal into a milestone Indonesia has now surpassed, with competition still continuing.

Indonesia has also collected eight silver and 21 bronze medals and stood 13th in the medal standings following Nurisa's victory.

Among Southeast Asian countries, Indonesia remained behind Thailand, which was fifth with 12 gold medals, and Malaysia, which occupied 11th place with six golds.

The Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games continue through Oct. 4.
