Leo, Daniel Fight Back to Claim Asian Games Badminton Gold
Ichinomiya, Japan. Indonesia's Leo Rolly Carnando and Daniel Marthin won the Asian Games men's doubles badminton gold medal on Tuesday after coming from behind to defeat China's Liang Weikeng and Wang Chang in a three-game final.
Leo and Daniel recovered from losing a tight opening game to secure a 19-21, 21-13, 21-18 victory at Ichinomiya City Municipal Gymnasium.
The triumph delivered Indonesia its third gold medal of the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games and gave Leo and Daniel their second gold of the tournament after they helped Indonesia win the men's team event.
“The key to our victory today was confidence. Because this was the final, we tried to play more boldly and with greater belief,” Leo said after the match.
“I'm grateful everything went smoothly, and I really appreciate Daniel for playing incredibly well today.”
Daniel said he was proud to contribute another gold medal to Indonesia.
“We are very grateful, especially to the PBSI officials and our coaches for trusting us to compete here,” he said.
The Indonesian pair had to fight back after Liang and Wang edged the opening game 21-19.
Leo and Daniel responded emphatically in the second, taking control to win 21-13 and force a deciding game.
The Indonesians carried that momentum into the third game and held their nerve in the closing stages to seal a 21-18 victory and the gold medal.
The result completed a golden double in Japan for Leo and Daniel, who were also part of the Indonesian team that defeated China 3-2 in the men's team final.
Indonesia now has three gold medals at the Games, with badminton contributing two and weightlifting the other. The country has also collected seven silver and 20 bronze medals for a total of 30.
As of Tuesday, Indonesia stood 15th in the medal table.
China remained far ahead at the top of the standings, with host Japan second and South Korea third.
