Police Under Scrutiny for Alleged Stakeout of AGO Investigator in Tin Case
Jakarta. Hinca Panjaitan, a member of Commission III of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR), has urged for the immediate summoning of Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo and Attorney General Sanitiar Burhanuddin. This follows allegations that Deputy Attorney General for Special Crimes Febrie Adriansyah was under surveillance by members of the Police's counterterrorist unit Special Detachment 88 (Densus 88).
In a statement to reporters on Monday, Hinca stated, "I will request the leadership of Commission III DPR to promptly arrange a summons for the Police Chief and the Attorney General so that they can provide clarifications and explanations."
Hinca said that the necessity of summoning was to directly address the issue and prevent it from spiraling into rumors. He stressed that their explanations are vital to ascertain if the surveillance is linked to the corruption case involving tin mining in Bangka Belitung, currently under investigation by the Attorney General's Office.
"We require clarity and transparency regarding this issue, particularly since it's suspected to be linked to the revelation of the megacorruption scandal in the Bangka Belitung tin mining case," Hinca added.
Recently, the AGO has been uncovering several big cases, notably the alleged corruption in the mining business permit (IUP) area of state-owned tin miner Timah from 2015 to 2022.
Earlier reports indicated that Febrie was being trailed by members of Densus 88 while dining at a French restaurant in Cipete, South Jakarta, on Sunday, May 19. One Densus 88 member was caught monitoring Febrie during dinner.
The incident, witnessed by two individuals between 8:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. local time, resulted in one Densus 88 member being apprehended by military police, while the other managed to escape. The arrested individual was found with a police ID.
Febrie has been under the protection of military police due to his investigation of the Rp 271 trillion ($17 billion) corruption case involving Timah's mining business permits. The case has implicated 21 suspects, including businessmen Harvey Moeis and Thamron alias Aon, socialite Helena Lim, and a former CEO of Timah.
