Jakarta. An Indonesian minister admitted Saturday that it would be difficult to convince US President Donald Trump to return to the world’s landmark climate pact.

Earlier this year, the US officially pulled out of the Paris Agreement, the accord that commits countries to keep global heating within safe limits by setting emission reduction targets. The US is also the first country to withdraw from the agreement twice, both times under Trump’s orders. There are now calls for Indonesia to persuade the US to return to the Paris Agreement. Asked about this, Environment Minister Mohammad Jumhur Hidayat admitted to being pessimistic that Washington could have a change of heart.

“[Trump] is stubborn. Why would we deal with someone as stubborn?” Jumhur said on the sidelines of the 2026 Indonesia Net-Zero Summit.

“Let the others deal with him,” Jumhur remarked, alluding to having other countries do the talking with the Trump government.

Ex-Deputy Foreign Minister Dino Patti Djalal has called on Jakarta to be a “pioneer” in climate diplomacy. He sees the G20 — the group that unites the world’s richest economies including the US — as a possible channel for Jakarta to promote climate action.

“If the US gets back to fossil fuel and multiplies [its usage], they will [produce] more emissions. They are the world’s largest economy. Who will have to compensate? We have to save more to keep that carbon budget,” Dino, who founded the foreign policy think-tank FPCI, said.

“I hope Indonesia in the G20, as well as the other members, that what you [the US] are doing is reckless and unfair. … You gotta get back to the Paris treaty and join the climate fight.”

Jakarta should also use its G20 membership to push for progressive climate actions “despite the US policies”, saying that the group makes up nearly 80% of the global emissions.

When ordering the exit in 2025, Trump had slammed the Paris accord as being “one-sided” and a “rip-off”.

Trump’s major not-so-climate-friendly moves also included withdrawing from the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP), a multi-billion-dollar initiative that helps emerging economies like Indonesia to wean off coal.
