Police Set One-Way for March 28–29 as Eid Return Traffic Peaks
Jakarta. Traffic police are preparing to roll out a staged one-way traffic scheme on major toll roads this weekend to manage the anticipated peak of the 2026 Lebaran return flow, as vehicle volumes from Central and East Java begin to climb toward Jakarta.
The National Police Traffic Corps (Korlantas) plans to implement the first phase of a localized one-way system on March 28–29, starting from kilometer 188 of the Cipali toll road to kilometer 263 of the Pejagan toll road, both heading toward Jakarta.
Korlantas chief Inspector General Agus Suryonugroho said the policy will be finalized based on real-time traffic conditions, with a decision expected on Friday.
“We will assess conditions on the ground. If traffic from East Java, Yogyakarta, Solo Raya, and Semarang remains high, a broader one-way scheme will likely be implemented starting from kilometer 414 of the Kalikangkung toll road,” Agus said at the Jasa Marga office at kilometer 70 of the Cikampek Utama toll gate in Karawang, West Java.
As of Thursday, traffic conditions remained relatively smooth. Average speeds on the Cipali toll road, particularly between kilometer 414 and kilometer 200, were still in the range of 60–70 km per hour, although congestion had begun to form near kilometer 20 due to roadside disruptions.
Agus noted that congestion was partly driven by motorists stopping along shoulders and overcrowded rest areas.
“Many travelers are stopping on the shoulder and in rest areas to take breaks. Almost all rest areas are already full, which is contributing to the buildup of vehicles,” he said.
Still, nighttime traffic flows have remained manageable overall.
On arterial roads, traffic has been noticeably heavier despite the absence of formal traffic engineering measures. Increased local mobility and post-holiday gatherings across urban agglomeration areas have contributed to the buildup, though conditions have not reached critical levels.
Authorities say the one-way policy is aimed at reducing the risk of severe congestion during the return peak while ensuring smoother and safer journeys for travelers heading back to Jakarta.
