Whoosh Passenger Numbers Hit 16,000 as Eid Return Travel Gains Pace
Jakarta. Passenger traffic on Indonesia’s Whoosh high-speed rail surged during the 2026 Eid holiday period, with around 16,000 tickets sold for departures on Tuesday, as the post-holiday return flow begins to build.
Operator KCIC said the majority of travelers are heading from Bandung to Jakarta, reflecting a growing return flow after the long holiday.
“Today’s Whoosh update shows ticket sales have reached around 16,000, dominated by passengers traveling from Bandung to Jakarta,” Corporate Communication Manager Emir Monti told reporters at Halim Station in East Jakarta.
The figure is expected to rise further as ticket sales remain open until the last scheduled departure.
“It is projected to continue increasing to around 24,000 passengers or more, as sales are still ongoing until departure time,” Emir said.
Mobility trends during the Eid travel season have remained strong, with cumulative passenger numbers showing robust growth since mid-March. Data from KCIC indicates that approximately 210,000 यात्रियों have used the Whoosh service between March 13 and March 30.
The high-speed rail line, which connects Jakarta and Bandung, has become an increasingly popular option for holiday travel due to its shorter travel time compared to road transport, especially during peak congestion periods.
Despite the current spike, officials say the return peak has yet to be reached. The busiest period is expected toward the end of the month, particularly on March 28 and 29.
“Today’s numbers are already quite high, but we expect another surge on March 28 and 29,” Emir said.
Indonesia typically sees a sharp increase in return travel following Eid al-Fitr, as millions of people return to major cities after celebrating the holiday in their hometowns.
