Jakarta. Malaysian travelers are buying an average of 1,150 tickets a day for Indonesia's Whoosh high-speed railway in September, making them the largest group of foreign users of the Jakarta-Bandung service, operator Kereta Cepat Indonesia China (KCIC) said Monday.

Since Whoosh began commercial operations, Malaysian nationals have accounted for 403,600 passenger trips through August 2026, representing 42.8% of the 944,100 trips made by foreign nationals, according to KCIC data.

The Malaysian market has remained significant this year. From January through August 2026, Malaysian travelers recorded 105,100 passenger trips on Whoosh, accounting for 40% of all trips by foreign nationals during the period.

“Malaysian tourists are the largest group of foreign Whoosh users,” KCIC General Manager Corporate Secretary Eva Chairunisa said.

“Whoosh makes travel between Jakarta and Bandung faster and more convenient, allowing tourists to visit more destinations within a limited amount of time.”

KCIC said growing Malaysian ridership has also been supported by cooperation between travel agencies in Malaysia and their counterparts in Jakarta and Bandung.

The company is seeking further partnerships with travel agencies to develop packages combining Whoosh journeys with tourist destinations, accommodation and other travel services.

As part of its efforts to expand the Malaysian market, KCIC participated in the MATTA Fair in Kuala Lumpur and conducted a sales mission in Penang.

During the events, the company promoted Whoosh services, ticket purchasing, Jakarta-Bandung connectivity and potential joint travel packages to Malaysian tourism businesses.

Jakarta and Bandung in One Trip
KCIC said Malaysian travelers who showed interest in Whoosh included solo travelers, families and small groups, while others visited Indonesia as part of organized tour packages.

Based on the company's interactions with travelers in Malaysia, visitors commonly spend two days in Jakarta and one in Bandung, or vice versa, with typical trips lasting between four days and three nights and five days and four nights.

Popular activities include culinary tourism in Bandung, shopping and urban tourism in Jakarta, and visits to West Java destinations such as Lembang and Ciwidey.

KCIC said some Malaysian tourists regard riding Whoosh as an attraction in itself rather than simply a means of traveling between Jakarta and Bandung.

Malaysian passengers have also shared their experiences aboard the train on social media, highlighting its comfort, affordability and punctuality, according to the operator.

Some travelers still prefer to purchase Whoosh tickets shortly before departure rather than booking well in advance because they want flexibility in case of flight delays or heavy traffic from the airport.

“KCIC will continue to maintain service quality and strengthen collaboration with tourism industry players in both Indonesia and Malaysia,” Eva said.

“We hope Whoosh can make it increasingly convenient for tourists to enjoy integrated trips across Jakarta, Bandung and various destinations in West Java.”
