Eid Passengers Surge 8.6% to 10.9 Million in Indonesia
Jakarta. Indonesia recorded 10.9 million public transport passengers during the 2026 Eid travel season through the day of Eid, marking an 8.6% increase from a year earlier, the Transportation Ministry said, as authorities brace for peak return flows later this week.
Total passenger movements reached 10,887,584 as of Eid day, compared with 10,027,482 in the same period in 2025, according to ministry data released Sunday.
“The number of travelers using public transport remained high through Eid, but overall conditions are still under control,” said Ernita Titis Dewi, head of the ministry’s communications and public information bureau. “Railways continue to dominate as the preferred mode.”
Rail transport accounted for the largest share, carrying 3,349,343 passengers, up 13.5% year-on-year. Ferry services followed with 2,664,004 passengers, a 14% increase, while air travel handled 2,397,192 passengers, rising nearly 3%. Bus journeys totaled 1,693,931 passengers, up 9.4%, and sea transport served 783,114 passengers.
On Eid day, which fell on Saturday, total passenger movements reached 873,916. Railways again led with 364,649 journeys, including 205,335 intercity passengers and 159,314 urban commuters.
Air transport recorded 206,785 passengers, consisting of 155,675 domestic and 51,110 international journeys. Ferry crossings accounted for 177,564 passengers, followed by buses at 103,777 and sea transport at 21,141.
Vehicle traffic also remained elevated at key transport nodes. A total of 193,237 vehicles exited Jakarta’s toll gates on Eid day, while 122,074 vehicles entered the capital. Overall traffic across Greater Jakarta toll gates reached 380,753 vehicles, with another 353,546 vehicles recorded at toll gates outside the metropolitan area.
On arterial roads, 601,275 vehicles were observed leaving Greater Jakarta, compared with 460,089 entering the region.
The ministry said on-time performance for public transport remained relatively strong during Eid, particularly for rail and sea services, helping maintain orderly travel despite the seasonal surge.
Authorities are now focusing on the return journey, which is expected to peak on March 24. Travelers are being urged to plan ahead to minimize congestion.
“We urge the public to arrange their return journey early and avoid peak periods so trips remain safe and comfortable,” Ernita said.
