“Please Stay Strong,” Prabowo Tells Mother of Ride-Hailing Driver Killed in Jakarta Protest
Jakarta. President Prabowo Subianto and Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka on Friday evening visited the family home of Affan Kurniawan, a ride-hailing driver who was killed after being struck by a police armored vehicle during a protest in Central Jakarta.
The visit took place at the family’s residence in Menteng, Central Jakarta, hours after Affan’s burial at Karet Bivak cemetery, where hundreds of mourners --including relatives, fellow drivers, and local residents-- gathered to pay their last respects.
Indonesian Military (TNI) commander Gen. Agus Subiyanto, Deputy Minister for Villages and Disadvantaged Regions Ahmad Riza Patria, and businessman Yusuf Hamka were also seen at the home earlier in the evening.
Prabowo said his presence was to personally deliver condolences to the grieving family. “I extend my deepest sympathy, may the family be given strength,” the president told Affan’s parents.
During the meeting, Affan’s father told Prabowo that he has three children, including the late Affan. “It was the three of us with him,” he said quietly.
Prabowo then held the hand of Affan’s mother and said, “Madam, I offer my condolences. I pray for your well-being.” The mother, unable to hold back tears, responded: “My son is gone, Sir,” as she wept.
“I know, please remain patient and strong,” Prabowo replied.
Affan’s father said he was both surprised and grateful for the president’s unexpected visit. “I didn’t think you would come here,” he told Prabowo.
Deputy Minister Riza Patria said Prabowo listened directly to the concerns and hopes of Affan’s family during the visit. “The president offered his condolences, support, and assistance, including fulfilling the family’s wish for a house,” Riza told reporters.
“The president is deeply concerned, expressed his sympathy, and requested firm action against the officer responsible for Affan’s death,” he added.
According to Riza, Affan’s relatives thanked Prabowo for his attention and support. They also highlighted the young man’s dedication to his family, noting that Affan had purchased land in Lampung and a motorbike for his younger sister before his passing.
“This is an example of a young Indonesian who showed great devotion to his family. We hope many other Indonesian youths can follow in his footsteps,” Riza said.
