The picture released by the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) shows the epicenter of a 6.5-magnitude quake in Sumenep, East Java, on Tuesday, Sept. 30, 2025.

Sumenep. A magnitude 6.5 earthquake struck off the coast of Sumenep late Tuesday night, toppling houses and sending residents fleeing into the streets, local officials said.

The quake hit at 11:49 p.m. and was powerful enough to cause panic across parts of Madura Island, with shaking reported in Bangkalan and Situbondo, according to residents. There was no report of casualties. The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) said tremors were also felt in Bali and West Nusa Tenggara.

Initial damage assessments point to Sepudi Island in Sumenep regency, where multiple homes were reported damaged. Authorities have not yet provided a final tally. “There are damaged houses -- some moderately, some severely -- but we are still updating the numbers through the early hours,” said Adjunct Commissioner Widiarti, spokesperson for Sumenep Police, early Wednesday.

As a precaution, power has been cut on Sepudi Island to reduce risks on the ground, she added.

BMKG located the epicenter about 50 kilometers southeast of Sumenep at a depth of 11 kilometers. An initial tsunami warning was lifted, but the agency urged residents to remain vigilant and follow guidance from local authorities due to the possibility of aftershocks.

Emergency teams were working through the night to verify damage and check for casualties. Officials urged residents to stay away from damaged structures and heed official updates as assessments continue.
