Pacitan, E. Java. A magnitude 5.5 earthquake struck off the coast of Pacitan, East Java, on Tuesday morning, sending tremors across several parts of Java and Bali, Indonesian authorities said.

The quake occurred at 8:20 a.m. local time (0120 GMT), with its epicenter located about 25 kilometers northeast of Pacitan, East Java, according to the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG). The earthquake originated at a depth of 105 kilometers, classifying it as a medium-depth seismic event.

BMKG said the earthquake was centered beneath the sea and did not pose a risk of triggering a tsunami. Despite its offshore origin, the shaking was felt across a wide area, including Pacitan and neighboring districts in East Java. Residents also reported tremors in parts of the Special Region of Yogyakarta and several areas in Bali, with light to moderate intensity.

In Blitar city and regency, around 200 kilometers east of the epicenter, the quake caused brief panic among residents. Many people rushed out of their homes and buildings as the ground shook for several seconds.

“I felt the shaking twice. The first one wasn’t very clear, but the second was strong enough that I immediately ran outside,” said Dian, a resident of Lawu Street in Blitar city. She said neighbors also gathered outdoors, fearing possible aftershocks.

Similar scenes were reported in other parts of Blitar, where some residents temporarily avoided buildings before conditions gradually returned to normal.

As of Tuesday morning, there were no official reports of casualties or structural damage linked to the earthquake. Local activities in several areas were briefly disrupted but resumed shortly afterward.

Authorities urged the public to remain calm, avoid spreading unverified information, and stay alert for possible aftershocks. Residents were also advised to check their buildings for potential damage and follow instructions from local officials.
