KPK Makes 25 Arrests in Graft Probe into Railway Directorate
Jakarta. The Corruption Eradication Commission, or KPK, has arrested 25 people and seized bank notes in rupiah and US dollar denominations in separate locations in the ongoing investigation into alleged graft in railway projects, a spokesman said on Wednesday.
The separate operations in Semarang, Surabaya, Jakarta, and West Java targeted officials of the railway directorate of the Transportation Ministry and businessmen who were involved in the projects.
The commission has yet to announce suspects in the case.
“We suspect corruption in the Trans Sulawesi railway project and various railroad maintenance projects conducted by the railway directorate of the Transportation Ministry,” KPK spokesman Ali Fikri told reporters in Jakarta.
Recently inaugurated by President Joko Widodo, the Trans Sulawesi is a milestone project to build the island’s first railway network which currently connects several towns in South Sulawesi.
The central government aims to connect the railway system between the northern and southern tips of Sulawesi Island.
"[Investigators] seized banknotes as evidence worth billions of rupiah and thousands of US dollars during the operations,” Ali added.
The Transportation Ministry said it’s waiting for further information from the KPK about the graft investigation.
"The Transportation Ministry supports all anti-corruption efforts and will fully cooperate with the related agencies in this matter,” the ministry’s spokeswoman Adita Irawati said in a statement.
