Jakarta. Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung said the provincial government will raise Transjakarta fares starting Jan. 1, 2027, after keeping fares largely unchanged for about 20 years.

Pramono said the government still has time to inform the public about the new fares before they take effect. He cited the Transjabodetabek route connecting Blok M with Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, where the fare has been set at Rp15,000 ($0.89) since Sept. 1.

“In determining the new transport fares, which have not changed for 20 years, we will implement them starting Jan. 1, 2027,” Pramono said at the peak event of Jakarta’s National Transportation Day commemoration on Tuesday.

The new Transjakarta fares have yet to be announced. Transjakarta operates within Jakarta, while Transjabodetabek serves routes connecting the capital with surrounding areas in Greater Jakarta. It also remains unclear whether the increase will follow a recommendation from the Jakarta Transportation Council (DTKJ), which has proposed raising the Transjakarta fare to Rp5,000 and the Transjabodetabek fare to Rp10,000.

At the same time, the Jakarta administration plans to expand its free public transport program by including companions of people with disabilities, job seekers, patients requiring regular medical referrals, low-income students who do not receive cash assistance, micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) receiving government assistance, and disaster victims undergoing recovery.

Pramono said eligibility requirements, particularly for students, will be regulated through a gubernatorial regulation.

He also said the government would continue providing transport subsidies but planned to reduce subsidies for groups considered financially capable of paying the fares.

“There are groups considered able to pay whose subsidies we will reduce. The subsidy is still quite high, but we will reduce it,” Pramono said.

The changes, he said, are intended to ensure that public transport subsidies are more precisely targeted at people who need them.
