Jakarta to Expand Transjakarta Services to Thousand Islands
Jakarta. The Jakarta administration plans to expand Transjakarta’s operations to include sea transportation services to the Thousand Islands (Kepulauan Seribu), an archipelago off Jakarta’s northern coast.
“Transjakarta will receive an additional assignment for sea transportation services to the Thousand Islands,” Governor Pramono Anung told reporters at Jakarta City Hall.
To support the new mandate, the administration plans to inject additional capital into Transjakarta, although the amount is still being calculated.
Pramono said the move was part of the administration’s broader plan to expand Transjakarta’s operations beyond the scope of its original mandate to provide transportation services in Jakarta.
Funding for transportation facilities in the Thousand Islands has so far been provided through the Jakarta Transportation Agency. Under the new arrangement, management of facilities supporting the service will be transferred to Transjakarta, which Pramono said would allow them to be managed more professionally.
The administration will also prepare and improve infrastructure to support sea transportation to the archipelago, including several islands that are planned to serve as main terminals.
Tidung, Pari, and Pramuka Islands are among those being considered, Pramono said.
The administration is also working on a financing scheme for the new service, including assessing its impact on transportation subsidies.
Pramono said Thousand Islands residents currently receive subsidized land transportation under certain service categories. The expansion of Transjakarta services to sea routes would therefore require adjustments to the existing subsidy scheme.
“If there is transportation to the Thousand Islands and only Thousand Islands residents use it, then it would all be free. In that case, the entire burden would fall on the Jakarta administration. So, we will calculate that,” he said.
The administration will determine the fare structure and subsidy requirements before launching the service, with the aim of keeping sea transportation affordable for residents while limiting its impact on the city budget.
