Jakarta to Close Major Roads and Enhance Public Transport for Prabowo-Gibran Inauguration
Jakarta. On Sunday, the Jakarta Transportation Agency will close four major roads and modify traffic on 45 others to ensure smooth access for the inauguration of President and Vice President-elect Prabowo Subianto and Gibran Rakabuming Raka at the DPR/MPR building.
The closed roads include Jalan Sudirman, Jalan MH Thamrin, Jalan Medan Merdeka Barat, and the eastern section of Jalan Majapahit. These closures will be in effect from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
These road closures are essential due to the presidential motorcade traveling from the DPR to the State Palace after the inauguration, as well as the setup of a stage for a public celebration aimed at entertaining the community. Thirteen entertainment stages are planned along Jalan Sudirman, Jalan MH Thamrin, and Jalan Medan Merdeka Barat.
"In support of the inauguration plans for the President and Vice President of the Republic of Indonesia, we in Jakarta will implement traffic management and host a public celebration in the Sudirman-Thamrin area, which will involve closing 45 roads," said Syafrin Liputo, Head of the Jakarta Transportation Agency, on Saturday.
To mitigate congestion, attendees of the entertainment events near Sudirman-Thamrin and Medan Merdeka Barat are encouraged to use mass transportation options available for a fare of just Rp 1. The Jakarta provincial government has also prepared 26 parking areas, both on-street and off-street.
Those traveling through Central Jakarta on Sunday, are advised to seek alternative routes as traffic will be redirected on several roads.
Train Service Adjustments
To manage the anticipated surge in passengers during the inauguration, trains from Bogor to Jakarta will not stop at Manggarai Station. Instead, they will stop at Gondangdia Station, allowing trains from Bekasi to continue directly to Dukuh Atas Station.
Transport Minister Budi Karya Sumadi announced this plan while inaugurating the Pondok Rajeg Station in Depok on Saturday.
This adjustment aims to prevent overcrowding at Manggarai Station, which faced severe congestion during the Indonesian Military (TNI) Anniversary event on Oct. 5. The upcoming festivities along Jalan Sudirman and Thamrin are expected to draw significant crowds from Jakarta and surrounding areas such as Bogor, Depok, Bekasi, and Tangerang.
In line with these preparations, railway operator Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) is increasing its Light Rail Transit (LRT) services on Sunday. The operator will run 364 train services, an increase from the previous 260.
“With the addition of these services, we hope the public will enjoy a smoother and more comfortable experience using public transport during the inauguration,” Mahendro said in a press release on Saturday, October 19, 2024.
LRT Jabodebek is also implementing measures to enhance passenger comfort, including increasing security personnel and service staff at various stations.
