Jakarta. The Jakarta administration is mobilizing community-based organizations and local neighborhood networks to reduce the number of slum areas in the capital.

Governor Pramono Anung said the city government will strengthen coordination with local residents and neighborhood officials to accelerate improvements in areas still categorized as slums.

“Of course, I want the number of slum neighborhood units to continue decreasing,” Pramono said during the inauguration of the Kebayoran Baru Subdistrict Office on Tuesday.

“How can we achieve this? By empowering the infrastructure already owned by the Jakarta administration, such as Jumantik, Dawis, PKK, as well as RT and RW,” he added, referring to community-based organizations and neighborhood associations commonly found in Indonesia.

Pramono said the groups would work together with regional leaders, including mayors and regents, to improve living conditions in densely populated neighborhoods.

According to data from The Central Statistics Agency (BPS), the number of slum-designated neighborhood units in Jakarta has fallen by 52.58% from 445 areas in 2017 to 211 areas out of 2,749 neighborhood units across Jakarta in 2026.

BPS and the Jakarta administration plan to continue their collaboration by conducting deeper analysis of 1,904 neighborhood units using satellite imagery overlay data to verify actual conditions on the ground.

The city government has also expanded green open spaces as part of broader efforts to reduce slum areas and improve urban living conditions.

Future programs will prioritize densely populated areas in West Jakarta and North Jakarta, especially the Tambora area in West Jakarta, which is known as one of the most densely populated urban areas in Indonesia.

Tambora has attracted public attention because of its crowded settlements, limited green open spaces, and challenges related to urban management and infrastructure.

Urban planning observer Muh Azis Muslim said the condition in Tambora reflects urban growth that happened without integrated long-term planning.

“The area’s proximity to trade centers and economic activity has encouraged rapid and uncontrolled settlement growth for many years,” he said.

Authorities said the designation of slum neighborhoods is determined not only by housing conditions but also by 11 indicators, including population density, building quality, ventilation, sanitation, waste management, drainage systems, neighborhood roads, public lighting, and building layout.
