Jakarta. A tall security fence outside Kota Kasablanka mall in South Jakarta has been dismantled after drawing public attention and concerns that businesses were preparing for possible unrest.

The fence was removed in the early hours of Sunday, Aug. 2, reopening the area in front of the shopping center and restoring access for visitors.

The removal came after Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung urged shopping malls and office buildings to take down newly installed security barriers, saying the capital remained safe and there was no need for heightened public concern.

Speaking at Jakarta City Hall on Tuesday, Pramono said maintaining a safe, comfortable and peaceful capital was a shared responsibility between the government and the public.

“What we are doing is to make Jakarta safe and comfortable. If we feel safe and comfortable, the atmosphere will also be safe and comfortable,” he said, adding that he believed Jakarta would remain safe and comfortable throughout August.

Pramono said security should not be measured solely by physical barriers but also by whether residents feel safe and comfortable using public spaces.

Images of newly installed fences at several malls in Jakarta and Surabaya had circulated widely on social media, prompting speculation that property managers were preparing for potential unrest.

The fence at Kota Kasablanka was about 100 meters long and 2.5 meters high and stood near the mall’s main vehicle entrance on Jalan Raya Casablanca.

Pramono said he understood why some property managers had installed additional barriers because of security concerns but expected them to be removed once conditions stabilized. He said the fences reminded him of the protests and unrest that swept Jakarta in August 2025.

The Jakarta administration has continued coordinating with the military, police and other law enforcement agencies to maintain security and public order, he said.

Indonesia experienced a wave of protests and riots in August and September 2025, triggered by public anger over lawmakers’ allowances, economic pressures and the death of ride-hailing driver Affan Kurniawan after he was struck by a police armored vehicle in Jakarta.

The unrest spread to several cities, leading to clashes between protesters and security forces, damage to public facilities and mass arrests.
